Haiti’s catastrophic earthquake in 2010 left in its wake an equally devastating crisis, one unseen on the Caribbean island for over a century – a widespread outbreak of cholera. The chaotic conditions that followed the earthquake – as well as the pre-existing problems of poor water and sanitation, overcrowded urban slums and a people with no previous experience of cholera – contributed to the outbreak which began in late October 2010.
