This project is based on a few years of actual fieldwork that I'm going to try and create this summer. For the past two years I have been running, either for exercise or preparing for a race and started picking up aluminum cans along the roadside. I first started running on March 6, 2010 for this project and have picked up 82.62 lbs. of aluminum cans and various scrap metal. I ran down Big Cottonwood Canyon on May 26, 2010 and picked up 20.9 lbs. and another 3.4 lbs. in last years Provo City Marathon. I run along farm roads and busy roadways trying to pick up aluminum cans to show both the monetary value and excess and which the average human litters. I hope to complete the entire I-15 corridor this year barring UDOT or UHP intervention. I hope to collect water samples and stories along the journey to detail the effects of plastics and litter on agriculture and in our drinking water. By doing this I hope to create enough scientific evidence to help persuade the discussion on plastic bags and encourage voluntary recycling.
