A pleasant surprise in the basement of the newly opened Dutch film institute EYE on the northern bank of the river IJ in Amsterdam (a fabulous building designed by Delugan Meissl).
It reminds me of Painted Theatre...
Painted Theatre is a project conceived by choreographer Bianca van Dillen, who worked with director Dirk Groeneveld and painter Floor van Keulen.
Van Keulen creates murals in front of a live audience and Van Dillen and Groeneveld were intrigued by his work process.
In Painted Theatre they recreate Van Keulen's rhythmic brushwork, his on-the-spot decisions about line and form and changing images in an interactive theater setting.
Utilizing 'Painter' software on an Apple G4 computer, Van Keulen created paintings in real time which served as an ever-changing environment in and with which dancers through choreographed movement and improvisations interacted, while live music by composer/musician David Dramm supported, emphasized, and commented on the action. Loose dramaturgical elements thus unfolded into a story line "sending chills up my spine" as one critic expressed it.
