"With deference to the rest of the country there is no place like Oregon. Swimming holes are abundant and the beauty and variety of the surrounding countryside are unmatched. This book arises out of my own deep love for swimming the outdoors and my quests for places to swim wherever I have traveled. I can recall several times having been on the road and hot, pulling into a gas station or market and asking where the nearest good swimming hole was. Usually, I was met with a blank look by people who wanted to help but who did not have the foggiest notion where or how to direct me. This is my attempt to help folks find and enjoy one of the best pleasures of life with a minimum waste of time, energy and resources."
Oregon's Swimming Holes has been out of print since 1995. I know this because last summer I was looking for locations to swim with my family and just about every blog or comment referenced this book with the punchline, "it's out of print". When I couldn't find it at Powells I knew I was in trouble. A quick search through the Amazon found 5 copies of the book ranging in price from $70 - $175 dollars. I thought to myself this book must be the real deal.
Determined to get out and swim I figured I would look up Relan and see if he might be interested in bringing his book back for another generation of swimmers to enjoy. I figured his content would be the perfect fit for an iPhone application that enables folks to easily find Oregon’s best natural swimming holes and to my great surprise he agreed.
Together we are working to convert the books original content to digital and integrate it with maps and location based search functionality to create a stunning user experience for outdoor enthusiasts living in or visiting the great state of Oregon.
