The music, for very low (cello, contrabass, contrabassoon) and very high (piccolo, alto flute, violin) instruments, is written so that the upper parts are generally mirror images of the lower ones. This conceit was in response to the nature of the mirrors, which, laying on the detailed mosaic of the floor, reflected the elaborate artistry of the ceiling. In that environment, heaven and earth did indeed come metaphorically, visually, together.
