Jimmy Tarangelo is an effing badass. He doesn't like paying rent, but he does like living in Manhattan. So what does he do? He lives in a van down by the river, literally.

I spent a few hours with Jimmy and let him speak his mind. I hope you enjoy it.

Really good production choices, Sean. The money shot (for me) is the shot of the RV's moniker: Aristocrat.

    Just says it all.

It seems to me that for a filmmaker, this kind of interview would be really easy to cut in a way to make a personal (homeless people are BAD!!) or political (homeless people should be [insert horrible thing here]) statement. I liked that you presented a very even...almost non-judgmental portrait.

    Well done, man.

I think he got towed. The story ends tragically. I think what we last heard is that one of his dogs died and he is now in a homeless shelter.

Wow, nice job man! So, I see that you filmed the Letus GG plane without zooming all the way in! Nice style... I've considered taking that approach as well. It looks remarkably organic!
  •
  • Imran Ahmed 10 months ago
Wonderful Sean. I loved the story and the simplicity. Would you plz like to share your post work flow? How do you achieve this film look? I'll be grateful for your feedback.
  • Ed David plus 9 months ago
Hi Imran. We shot this video with the Sony EX1 using a letus extreme adapter - and we pulled out on the zoom so you can see the vignette from the adapter. We like the look of it - it feels like 16mm film and it gives some nice very wide shots - using still nikon lenses for an organic look. We shot the video using CINE gamma 3 I believe to give it a filmic punch. I know we shot to Sony sXs cards and Kathy the editor used Avid to ingest it. That was I believe two years ago so now it's even easier - you can ingest directly. I believe the color correct was done just using the Avid's internal color correction tool.

Intimate film, really pulls the viewer to pause in their own life and consider those who may appear to have less than them. Kinda reminds me of the impoverished rich people, you know, the ones who are rich, but not wealthy, and there is a difference!
While watching it I knew it was going to feel too short, as though the film is really, somehow just an extended-trailer for a longer film. The film made me want to hear more stories from Jimmy, yes... to see that resume he mentioned, you betcha!

I think this short film really shows how powerful a film can be. Those who have seen this film, then they meet up with Jimmy's place there in Manhattan Indirectly, Sean's film will create a bonding moment, however brief, between that person and Jimmy. And, with hope, all generosities will be extended towards him. His house may have a flat, but that will not keep him from looking upward, forward. That mobile home he hopes for...it will feel like a mansion after living in a van and RV on the street.
Thanks for sharing this film with so many Sean...and thanks to Vimeo!
