Bush Cubby
This short form piece was made in the desert scrub of the Outback with elders & young people. Building bush cubbies is still common play in remote Australia. Young people scavenge rusty bits of tin, old tv's, sparkly bits from their homes, old tyres, trinkets & toys. They disappear into the bush a few hundreds meters from the prying eyes & mores of the adult world, playing with notions of autonomy & tween negotiation amongst the snakes & red backs.
This film is the introduction to a longer piece which interviews other children & adults about their memories of building bush cubbies across generations. Aboriginal elders talk about living out bush in structures made of similar materials. The children have even adopted some traditional building techniques passed down from their elders, building cubbies together.
Filmed & Edited by Brian Cohen
Music by Staffan Svahn
Featuring Abby, Alana & Bindi's Old TV
