Clem Pearce, a Canadian navigator with 101 Squadron RAF, was shot down over France in 1944, and spent the last year of the war as a PoW. When he was being repatriated to England in May 1945, he narrowly escaped the fate of a plane carrying dozens of PoWs returning from Europe.
