For those who want to edit your mts files in programs that doesn´t support AVCHD yet (like Premiere Pro), Here's a way to do it without loosing quality.
in this tutorial the final file will be WMV HD @ 4000 kbps, of course you can set the final H.264 @ 4000 kbps. both are really good for vimeo .
Hope this helps you getting awesome quality footage from your HG10 :)

i try to import files and i get this error:

cannot open the file 0009.MTS, any idea?
  • Tiago Pierotti 2 years ago
    No idea,
must be a codec problem... try to install GOM PLAYER, and see if the MTS files play with no problem.
or Re-install the full version of TempEnc.

I have a Canon HG10, and i too got the same error message when I drag my .mts file to "add a clip". It's getting frustrating for me. I just spent $1000 on a camcorder that I can't download or edit my files. I've tried Roxio EMC 10.0 and Corel and neither of them work.
  • Tiago Pierotti 2 years ago
Really must be a codec issue... what editing program do you have installed?
try to install this in this order : 1st: GOM Player and try to play the MTS files. 2nd: fddshow codec pack 3rd: Tempenc and see if it works now....

yap, you can also do the 3/2 pulldown. didn´t do it cause i'm 25p. but you have the option in the settings :)

I just got the Canon HG 10. I love the camera but was close to taking it back because my Pinnacle Studio wouldn't edit the video files. Thanks for pointing us in the right direction. Awesome job. I'll be investing in some software soon. Untill then I've got the HDD space to film and save before editing the clips.
    Thanks

Anyone know how to convert mts files to mpeg using Mac?
  • Tiago Pierotti 2 years ago
sony Vegas pro 8 or imovie 08. Both supports AVCHD .
  •
  • Shaun M. 2 years ago
hey, I just got this camera, but Sony Vegas 8 doesnt seem to open MTS or M2TS files, GOM player doesnt play MTS, and I also installed TMPGE trial, and when I drag the file, the program just closes and gives an error message.

Only program that seems to convert M2TS (not MTS) files is ProCoder, but I lose lots of the video quality!

    Tiago,
Bravo to you my friend and thanks for your help. As you know I had trouble with TMPGEnc importing mts files. Their tech dept was no help with this.
After a lot of searching around I was able to get TMPGEnc to work after installing "K-Lite Codec Pack 3.8.0 Full" version for free. Comes with a great player too for quick viewing of converted files. Google is great when you know what to look for. TMPGEnc even did a great job with only 128 vid card memory on my laptop. I went through this tutorial again with great success. I did already have Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8.0 free trial that does import and edit MTS files but there is a lot less control over the edited video output settings as compared to Premier Pro from what I see here. I am thinking hard about PP as my editor.
I am so happy now I could LOL. The HG 10 is awesome and you have made the tools available to get the most out of it. Do you shoot in LP, SP, XP or HXP with the HG 10?
Thanks again for showing us the way.
    Bud
  • Tiago Pierotti 2 years ago
    Hey Bud!
I'm really glad that you could get things working with your HG10! Now it's really easy to shot, edit and upload.
Yeah, i have also Sony Vegas but love premiere pro it's a huge difference... so many options!
Once you start working with Premiere pro you'll learn so many things that you can do with it!
It's quite a heavy program... upgrading for a good Desktop when you have the chance will help you a lot...
I always shot HXP @ 25 fps, only in some time lapse i use XP mode.
Appreciate you comment Bud and can´t wait for your videos!

how did you get tmpgenc to encode to .mpg???

i follow your instructions exactly, but it outputs a .m2t!! which premiere elements cannot handle.

    please help.

hmmm, ok. i accepts the m2t file, but the video starts with a red frame, then ends with green!! any idea what is happening here? this ruins the beginning and end of the clip.

    Same thing Jess,
There's a part in this tutorial that i explain how to export from premiere pro with good quality, if you want to export direct from PP for uploading in Vimeo Just edit all in PP and when finished export as WMV, set the quality to maximum and play with the bit rate for the final video file :)

  • Tiago Pierotti 2 years ago

No, just edit all in 1920x1440 (with the 1920x720 program preset) and when you finish you editing just convert it to 1280x720 to upload in Vimeo. Keep the final 1920x1440 cause it has perfect quality.

  • Jim Feist 2 years ago
Hi. Nice tutorial. I have a problem though.
My TMPGEnc files only output m2t. How do I output mpeg? Your demo shows you are creating m2t, then like magic you have mpeg.

If I play the m2t file it is jumpy. I am using a Canon HF100 1920x1080.
  • Tiago Pierotti 2 years ago
    Hey Jim,
m2t is an extension for mpeg2. after exporting you can simply rename it to mpeg.
I don't think the jumpy is related to the m2t extension...
Do some tests to figure it out... anything just ask :)
  •
  • Jim Feist 2 years ago
Thx Tiago, renaming to mpeg works. Also, changing my codecs fixed the jumpy video.
  •
  • Scott Harris 2 years ago
Yikes - I did this, and it took TMPGEnc 22 minutes to convert a 40-second .mts file!! And I have a fast computer (Vista 64, Q6600, 8gb RAM, raptor drive)... any ideas?
  • Tiago Pierotti 2 years ago
    WOW Scott!
Something is definitely wrong because a 40 sec video should take 30 sec to convert! are you converting into the mts into WMV, because WMV takes longer... that's why i convert the mts into mpeg2 for the editing and only convert the final video to WMV for uploading in Vimeo...
Make a few tests and give me your feedback :)
  •
  • Scott Harris 2 years ago
Yeah, I'm having some bizarre problems with TMPGEnc Xpress, in that it just won't work for me. I tried uninstalling most of my codecs and doing a fresh install, and for some reason I only get a green screen now. Not sure what is up. Elecard Converter Studio works, but I'd prefer to use this... I guess I'll just have to keep fiddling with it
  • Tiago Pierotti 2 years ago
yep, i think this is much better than using elecard... the green screen probably is the amount of codecs that you have installed and uninstalled... try using the fddshow codec viewer because it gives you the codec list that are installed and the priority of each...
  •
  • David Vidmar 2 years ago
I have same problem with green screen.

Thank you soooooo much for this tutorial. I tried everything you said but it really was not working to be honest with you. I was about to return the video camera and wait a few months until some good programs come out. Anyway, here is how it finally started to work for me:

    1. I downloaded the trial version of TMPGENC 4.0 XPRESS

    2. I downloaded K-Lite Codec Pack FULL version 3.9.3

After all that was installed I made sure to restart the computer and I was finally able to add files into tmpgenc.

BTW, when I was installing the K-LITE it asks you whether you want to delete DIVIX and some other files. I clicked YES because then it installs new ones so have no fear. Also, I selected the DEFAULT installation.

    Good Luck and have fun.
  • Lucien Kleijkers 2 years ago
    Make sure AVC is enabled:

    - In the start menu go to folder k-lite codec pack/configuration and run ffdshow video decoder
    - in the codec tabs check the first entry H.264/AVC: if it's disabled click on it and change it to libavcodec.

Note if you have coreAVC installed don't do this (you don't need to do anything).

Hey I was wondering if anyone knew where I could read up on file formats. I realized I do a lot of stuff but when it comes to conversions I am completely dependent on tutorials like this. Do you know where i could find info on this stuff for someone who has no clue beyond the obvious? I just want to be able to convert things wisely on my own beyond just getting it to be able to play on WMP or VLC or whatever you use.
  •
  • Lucien Kleijkers 2 years ago
    Nice tutorial. Some comments:

    - This is not lossless... You do lose little bit of quality but close enough for most I'd say
    - Why double-framerate progressive? Why not leave it same as original?
    - You will get better quality for vimeo typically using 2 pass peak/average

    Hey ya, excellent tutorial.

Just one question, i chose WMV as the output. The default bitrate is 1000 kb/s but this results in a really choppy vid.

I noticed that my vid was shot at 17mb/s so what i did was i set the bitrate to 17000 kb/s, essentially matching my vid. Did i do the it correctly or am i mistaken?

The resulting vid is amazing, no choppiness at all. The downside is processing 100mb = 1 hour. Plus, the resulting files were slightly larger than the MTS source.
  •
  • boredgenius 1 year ago
Oh, follow up incase anyone knows the answer. =p

If we shot in Progressive, i wonder why under FILTER we have to set the deinterlace mode to

    "deinterlace always double frame"

what if we want our output to stay progressive?

Now that Premiere Pro CS4 handles native AVCHD format, does that still make sense to use TMPGEnc? Have you tried to import directly your MTS in Premiere CS4? And if so, have you noticed any quality difference with the stunning results obtained through TMPGEnc?

I still work with CS3 and wonder if anyone has tried AVCHD in CS4. It would convince me to upgrade, since it'll be really time-saving to use Premiere only...

Wow, it seems you are taking a lot of unnecessary steps.

If you just want to upload a video from your camera to Vimeo you can encode the MTS file directly to WMV in TMPGEnc Xpress.

If you want to edit the footage first encode it to a MPG file like you show us in your video. When you are done editing you can encode from within Premiere directly to WMV format. Why would you encode it again to yet another MPG file and then into a WMV file? It's not much, but you WILL lose quality this way (and it will take a lot of extra time).

    Just my 2 cents.

It would be great if Premiere CS4 can natively handle MTS (AVCHD) files because encoding them to MPG first takes up A LOT of time!

Sorry if Im going over old stuff, Im new to all this. I have a HG10, I purchased Final Cut express to convert my Mts (AVCHD) on my mac computer, I did not realize that I have to have a intel processor, my mac has a powerpc. Is there anything I can do too be able to convert the mts files. In the apple website I was able to download (demo version) voltaic, this allows me to convert files that are not too large but its slow and I think I loose the quality. Can anyone help? Thanks

Not to state the obvious, but very helpful and cool!

I'd like to do all my video editing after I process the mts files to m2t file (or mpeg). My video processor loves the converted files and it flows like butter.

How do you "batch" convert 10 or so files at the same time. I have my preferred templates saved. When I get to the "Encode" screen it asks for "file name" as in, one file total. I'd like each file I put in the batch to come out of the batch independently.

    Thanks
