Concieved as a atmosphere video inspired by dutch painter Johanes Vermeer showing the powers of mental ray illumination and final gathering with high antialising rendering in mental ray. Scenes use different mental ray lighting setups. Originaly i had realflow simulations of liquids being poured into glasses but i eventually trashed them since they were not as good as i would have wished for. This whole CGI short movie was done in 3ds max 2013 using mental ray renderer as i have mentioned with some after effects compositing... Some attention also went into shaders, textures and materials. Whole texturing was eventualy built upon very powerfull mental ray shader Arch and Design with displacements, bump mappings etc. Lights used were throughout the whole spectrum ranging from mental ray sky portal to standart spotlights etc.
It all eventually took around 3 weeks to render on i7 4 gigs computer.. to avoid flickering every scene has cached indirect illumination and final gather prior to render.. antialiasing is 1 / 16 .. final gather indirect illumination for each shot took around 5-8 hours on same computer specs to calculate.
I was yet again inspired by classic masters of painting especially dutch master vermeer. His way of seeing world in perfect perspective and detail was something really special and for me he is the ultimate artist. I wonder what would vermeer have thought about modern CGI artist being able to max out their visions that would have taken months to render by hand for single frame. This might be attempt to put vermeer on steroids and into motion :-) Art created by computers is in the end or at least i see it that way very similar to old school technique of painting art by hand. What drives you is the vision which is in your head and eventualy means of achieving it by certain set of tools are somewhat irrelevant.. maybe i am wrong but it might be definitely something to think about..
