On June 24, 1955, Gamal Abder Nasser was elected president of Egypt by a margin of 99.9% in a referendum. In January 1956, the new Constitution of Egypt was drafted, entailing the establishment of a new single-party system, the National Union. Nasser's nomination for the post was put to the public in referendum in June; and it was approved by an overwhelming majority. Nasser finally completed his rise to power and would turn out to be one of the most striking figures in the middle east of the 20th century.
