I went through this a couple of times and didn't find the critique of "the reality of ...Confidence." I don't know if that's a misprint or if I"m a little slow.
Just one guy's opinion: my take on Brown's approach is that an argument of man vs. God is actually an argument of man vs.man (because religion is a construct of the human mind), and the extraneous nature imagery shows us that in the grand scheme of things our arguments lack much significance (life throughout the universe moves along just fine despite the argument); so perhaps the best approach to the argument (and many others, I'm sure) is to ignore it.
That's my two cents. Thanks for sharing your insight and making it so accessible.
When it comes to ignoring...that is the last thing I think people should do. There's a saying, "You can't be neutral on a moving train." I believe in that whole-heartedly. If we ignore these issues, we are fueling the momentum of the other side of the argument. I refuse to ignore this repulsive hate from others. I'm here to help stomp it out and let it become something of the past. It's worked so well before with many other civil and moral issues...I'm not going to ignore one moment of it.
Thank you for much for the insight. I hope you'll not end up turning your cheek to horrible issues such as this one. :)
Matthew, thank you for this amazing and moving video. I'm new here at Zacuto and this was one of the first short films that Steve Weiss showed me and I was blown away by your use of imagery. In nature, everything is perfect and beautiful...including every single creature, man, and woman, on earth. So no one can deny the pure beauty in any of us. Thanks for sharing your art, compassion and strength. ~zacuto sue
I totally think there is a beginning, middle and end. The show start off with no narration were we see landscapes, after a little bit of that start hearing audio message that progressively get worse and more intense, then the footage starts getting closer and closer. We start seeing other example of live in let live other animals as the narration starts getting very intense. It has a huge ark where we see a tranision to showing nude men and we hear the most offensive narration that ends with a lady hanging up on the crazy woman on the phone. We see shots of the men walking backwards, showing how that is the past as we start hearing about if their could be a Gay president, while we see the resolution of the group of males with happy faces showing love for all.
He states the problem, we see and hear it, it builds, we have some resolution to it and we try to see the future as progressive. It's basically a 3 act play.

As for the last film about confidence, I thought it was very good really. Disgusting, disturbing, all of those things are emotions and to me the measure of a good film is if it made me feel anything. And indeed it made me feel those things quite strongly really.
Anyway, enjoyed listening to the both of you discuss stuff. Good pair, keep the reviews coming!
YOU DONT NEED TO HAVE A BEGGINING A MIDDLE AND AN END I THINK.
"GAY = SIN" felt much more complete... putting together 2 very contrasting forces: hate/violence through the voices vs love/beauty/peace/joy through the images... and the movement of the camera floating also give a warm feeling to the image for me.
NOTE to Steve and Philip: I'd like to hear you talk a bit more on how some technical elements or artistic choices, according to you, helped or did not help in making the video successful.
Thank you.
And yes, I'd like to see more technical critiques as well. I wish they'd been more harsh on my video, hehe.
Love critics, just don't review my crap.

They've REALLY got their shit messed up.. the things they believe and say genuinely make me feel ill.
I watched that clip. These people are so terrifying. They are extremists, no different than the ones that attacked us on 9/11. I'm pretty sure they would kill in the name of their god. That's when all of this religious stuff gets dangerous and the military and the police need to get involved. It is to the point of a cult style mental illness. What a scary world. Here is the part I don't get: we don't bother them for their beliefs, but they get up in our grill because we won't believe what they want us to believe. Religion is an explanation for things we don't understand! That's cool. But they need to be more tolerant: Live and Let Live.
I couldn't agree more. What saddens me most I think is the fact that their kids aren't even given the chance to see how sick their parents' beliefs are. Seeing kids brainwashed like that is so wrong. I have to say, getting up in our grill is actually a pretty nice way to describe what they do. Going to the funerals of dead soldiers killed fighting for their country holding signs like this:

is just totally abhorrent.
