There is no word in either Cantonese or Mandarin for "gay." The terms in use are either derogatory or euphemistic - or borrowed from English. How do you come out to your family when there is no common language for your experience?
This documentary, released in 1997, was the first (and possibly still only) film in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English, to explore the lives of Chinese and Chinese-American lesbians, gays, and bisexuals.
"There Is No Name For This" was co-produced Cianna P. Stewart, Ming Yuen S. Ma, and the Living Well Project (now API Wellness Center) in San Francisco. Cianna and Ming co-directed and shot the film together.
It premiered at the International Asian American Film Festival in San Francisco, and won Best Documentary from the Chicago Gay & Lesbian Film Festival.
