On May 22, three weeks after Jim Whittaker's historic ascent, four more Americans attempted to meet on Everest’s summit—Barry Bishop and Lute Jerstad repeating the South Col route, and Willi Unsoeld and Tom Hornbein attempting a first ascent of the ferocious West Ridge. After summiting, they were forced to spend the night out without tents or sleeping bags. All four survived, and teammate Dave Dingman found them the following morning.
