Moving beyond the famous and atmospheric Cairo Central station, this film explores both of Cairo’s modern metro lines, complete with maps, on-screen explanatory captions and full informative commentary by Paul Quince.
After an overview of French-built Line 1, with reference to the Helwan suburban line it replaced and tickets, the action moves to the historic Cairo suburb of Mar Girgis. With half a dozen north-bound and south-bound trains arriving and departing, plus views of the station and its surroundings overlooked by St George’s Church, this gives a real feeling for the location.
The film then moves to explore Japanese-built Line 2, with a squeaky west-bound arrival at Opera station, located underneath the Nile island of Zamalek. The action then moves to Cairo’s modern northern suburbs with views of north-bound and south-bound trains at elevated Agricultural Faculty station near Line 2’s northern terminus of Shubra el-Kheima. Run-time 8 mins 19 seconds (shot 2004).
