Mayra Vega is a single mother of three daughters and a grandmother of two. A survivor of domestic violence, Mayra become a social worker in Mexico to help others overcome challenging life circumstances.She came to United States for the first time back in 1989, through Tijuana, then went back in 1991. Mayra has been living in the United States permanently since 1997. Mayra is also a board member of the Latino Equality Alliance, an organization that educates communities about the importance of acceptance. Her passion for the issue comes from her own experiences of being a proud, bisexual woman and overcoming hardships throughout her life. Mayra currently works for LAANE, the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy. She is a community organizer building a coalition of students, professors, nonprofit organizations, artists, small business owners, and community members, educating them to get them active in supporting hotel workers residing in Boyle Heights. Her objective is to get the hotel workers better wages to help improve their quality of life, while improving the local economy.
