The Atlantic Forest once covered a vast part of coastal Brazil, and reached inland several hundred kilometres, as well as parts of Paraguay and northern Argentina.
Today, several conservation areas protect parts of the forest, and projects are under way to link some of the remaining islands of forest by planting trees to form corridors to allow the free movement of wildlife.
