Parenting is a learning process, filled with trial and error. And now there are voluntary classes to help you make the grade.
“None of us were born being a parent and there is no good manual, so yes this is for people that want to try new ideas and confirm that what they’re doing is working,” says Michele King, director of child advocacy program with Golisano Children’s Hospital.
Sponsored by Lee Memorial Health System and local children’s advocacy centers- parenting classes poll parents, then address their top concerns.
“We touch on discipline, the roles of the parent and child and who should be doing what in the home, the rules in the home,” says King.
Whether it’s the terrible two’s or troublesome ‘tweens, managing bad behavior can be a challenge for any parent. If it’s not handled properly the situation at home can go from bad to worse.
“This helps parents have alternatives to spanking or using abusive language with children. So these offered them some tips and ideas. If you’ve worked all day and you’re tired, take a breather. Because when everything is rushing, things can go bad,” says King.
Lowering anxiety is part of disciplined parenting. At the end of the eight-week course, moms and dads take a survey. Their responses reveal they’ve done their homework.
“’We have no yelling now, we respect each other, we play games together, we always say I love you.’ It’s been very rewarding for most people to have a change in the home environment that makes things calmer and run more smoothly,” says King.
Proving it’s never too late to pickup powerful pointers.
