This is a short documentary that was made for a video contest for Birth Matters Virginia.

The video consists of a synopsis of a typical birth by a registered nurse in a labor & delivery unit of at a local hospital, followed by individuals and couples sharing their birth experiences.

The focus of this documentary is to show people that they have a choice in their birth, rather than just trusting "professionals" to take care of everything for them. You can educate yourself and have an amazing experience in your birth rather than just a "medical procedure."

Many thanks to:
Laura, Louis & Esther, David & Paula, Brian & Nicole, Dana & Mike, Jeff & Elizabeth, Jonathan, and all of their kids!

I hope you enjoy.

Camera: Panasonic DVX-100a; Mic: MXL-990

That description of the hospital birth sounds pretty much just like mine, although forceps and vacuum extraction were not used, but I did have to have oxygen and an amnio infusion.

This is video is pretty much realistic and hard to see. In German: mein-allergroesster-wunsch.de "Schwanger werden" ist nur was für Frauen. ;-)

Good info, but I would´ve liked to see the opinion of the some doctors explaining why they what they do, and what problems they may encounter following your approach. The vast majority of parents are not interested in making birth a "nice" experience, but in safety. And this is not covered in the slightest bit in your piece, which is the main thing you should be talking about if you´re trying to educate people, IMO.

    Cheers.

Thanks for the comment Andario. The main challenge that I faced with this project is that it had to be less than 7 minutes long, and I only had 3 weeks to complete it. Of all the topics that I could’ve covered, I chose to focus on giving testimonials from all the people that I knew who had natural or semi-natural births.

Doctors do not follow the approaches that are outlined by the people in the video; they have their own procedures, which cause many problems for mother and child. The L&D nurse at the beginning gave a synopsis of a typical birth scenario.

I think you may have missed the point of this video. My main concern in this project was to show future parents that many other people have chosen an alternative approach to birth that does not involve a hospital; I wanted to stir their interests; I wanted to give true testimonial accounts. From there they can go and find the vast amount of information, facts, and statistic that are easily accessible regarding the topic of natural birth.

One such video that deals with what you propose is “The Business of Being Born”. Thanks again.
