The “Bairro 6 de Maio" in the peripheral area of Lisbon in Santa Cruz de Damaia is one of the slum areas of Lisbon, which was established from former emigrants of the Cap Verde, Angola and Mozambique.
They came with hope of a better life, built simple houses and found some work. Starting from nearly nothing with a little space where they were teaching adults how to write and to read, along twenty years the "Centro Social Bairro 6 de Maio" has grown bigger and bigger and today has become a big project that includes a Kindergarten, a ATL (actividades dos tempos livres / activities for kids), Social Street Work, Family Help Programs, Culture Programs and Workshops, and so on …
In opposite to other films about such kind of "slums" of Lisbon, showing the negative sides of this quarters the film "Bairro 6 de Maio" shows the simple, normal day to day life of the people in this quarter.
Two women Ariana and Tania, which are living in the "Bairro 6 de Maio" and working in the Social Station of the quarter talking about their life as emigrants, what it means to be Afro-European, their culture, their life in the quarter, their ideas and their experiences as social workers with the children and teenager in the quarter.
