Why would you buy this 7D, when you can spend $600 more and get the Canon 5D MK II ????
  • Andrew Thomas 3 months ago
Because I don't want a FF sensor and I do want 1080p24. The 7D satisfies both of those, the 5DMKII doesn't. If stills becomes a more important part of my life, I will get FF then.
  • Lonny Quattlebaum plus 3 months ago
Price difference between 7D and 5D is $1000 with out lens, $1500 with kit lenses. 5D is probably a better still camera. Looks like 7D will handle video better, with it's 29.97 + 24,25,50, and 60 frame rates.

Video is my gig, so I'm trading the 5D for the 7D.

Good thinking, Andrew. Congratulations for getting yours. Good price?

IMO, if you want to shoot video, get the 7D, if you are into stills, the 5D2 is your gear. Besides, the 7D is second generation Cine-DASLR from Canon, so if anything, it should cost more.

The main reason I would not get the 5D2 is its ridiculously oversized sensor. That is a deal-killer for me, and with the equally ridiculous downsampling in video mode, you are losing a good 75% of the 5D2 sensor's pixels in video mode, anyhow. It was great until the 7D came out, however.

The Panny GH1 has a slightly smaller sensor, so actually I would prefer that over the D7, but for the frame rate flexibility alone, the D7 is a Godsend.

I would not shoot anything at 24p due to the shutter blur, but it is nice that the D7 now can do 29.97 and not 30p. Plus, if you shoot for PAL TV, it does 25 Hertz, wow!

Lastly, Lonny, how are you going to "trade" your old Canon for this new one?

The question is, how can you accurately preview 24p AND 30p in the same vimeo upload?
  • bunkofurko 3 months ago
I have no clue -- you probably cannot?

Why does it flicker every now and then? That worries me a bit.
  •
  • Brothers Cho 3 months ago
It flickers because hes changing his exposure setting with the dial on manual mode (i believe)
  •
  • PopSci.com plus 3 months ago
You're right, the flicker is from manually adjusting exposure. And yes, doing framerate demos in flash video for the web is not ideal. Hopefully we can have clips straight from the camera up soon.

To be honest you'd have to say all previewing on the web is not ideal. The word accurate doesn't come in to play. It would be nice to get downloads of separated clips. Can that be done?

there's gotta be a second test to this. It seems like this person that shot this video has never use video dslr b4.
  • bunkofurko 3 months ago
Now, that seems like a rather tall statement, no? What are you basing yours findings on, Mr. Sherlock?

Anyhow, why is that even a problem if the new Canon EOS 7D is PopSci.com's fors HD-DSLR? I don't see any problem with that, actually. In fact, I thank the poster for helping us all. And I loved the test tremedously, not to emntion the fact that he had the camera right at the most exciting intersection of America, perhaps the whole world.

Thank you, PopSci.com. Don't mind the nasties.

Great camera, it seems. But probably when you move up to 1080p regions, the CMOS+rolling shutter will give you the usual headaches.

It’s funny because we are prepping an action flick for this winter that will have some great Manhattan fight scenes and chases sequences. We are actually looking for a NY or Philadelphia based DP, as our previous chap retired, he did not do digital, anyhow. Unfortunately, those crucial fight/chase scenes we will have to shoot on film, or at the very least, on Panny P2 Varicam (CMOS+global shutter). But, we figure on using two or three of these little D7s for the non-critical shots, i.e. when there is no fast camera movement or subject movement. We”l probably use the D7 for 75-80% of the shots, and only 20-25% would be acquired by a film camera or Panny Varicam. It is still a tremedous cost savings, of course. Anybody care to chime in?

And there could be scripts that can be shot 100% with a Cine-DSLR, just not those where there is fast movement by the camera itself or by the subject(s) front of the lens. Too bad, really, but that’s the one major downside with CMOS plus rolling shutters.

Was this shot in New York? Wherever it is, I want to go.
  • bunkofurko 3 months ago
Corner of West 43rd Street & Brodway, also know as "Times Square" or "Center of the World." It is really quite something, but you must be there in person!
  • Mariusz Pruszynski 3 months ago
Actually it's very funny that it is called 'center' or 'crossroads of the World' while almost every corner in Hong Kong looks like this :)
  • bunkofurko 3 months ago
I guess next thing you are going to tell us is, Times Square in Manhattan, New York looks the same exact thing as the "Palace of Culture" Stalin-era monstrosity in Warsawa, Polska?

The big difference between NYC and HK is, Times Square looked recognizably like it is today way back in the late 1920s, at which time in HK there were no tall buldings to speak of, only some huts. Think of Katowicze in the 1950s for comparison.

Thank you for uploading. I still see some aliasing, i. e. at the grid in the back. This problem was massive with the 5D, but this should be better here, because of the smaller sensor. What´s your meaning?

    thx for the test.

pretty ugly for the 'centre' of the world!

anyway, just to reassure you, the 'centre' of the world is wherever i happen to be at any given time.
at least that's how i see it! :)
if not, it's Sol in Madrid but i'm there quite often anyway.

wait hold on, i just remembered, it's paradise, Celtic Park, Glasgow!

    anyway, more tests greatly appreciated!

How long can you shoot video in the 7D?
  •
  • diego gagliardi 3 months ago
That's my same question? How long can you shoot video, all day? 2 hours? Thanks.
  •
  • At 30 fps individual videos can last up to 12 minutes. Check dpreview.com/previews/canoneos7d/page13.asp for more info.

On hot days with no ventilation, your CMOS sensor might heat up inside of 20-25 minutes. First the write bitrate drops, then you will loose entire frames, and finally the camra shuts down cold for a prolonged "cooling-off period."

If you do not have a B-camera that you can continue with, it is always a good time to go to the concession stand for that beer.

These DSLRs were designed for STILL photography, so they do not handle continued operation required for video shoots too well.

    **"Looks like 7D will handle video better, with it's 29.97 + 24,25,50, and 60 frame rates. "**

    New update from Canon:
    dpreview.com/news/0910/09102003eos5dfirmware.asp

5D Mk II Firmware to be updated for 24p/25p and possibly other frame rates?! Video may be just as much the 5D's domain as the 7D's. Plus you'd get the bokeh of the full frame :)
