Video is my gig, so I'm trading the 5D for the 7D.
IMO, if you want to shoot video, get the 7D, if you are into stills, the 5D2 is your gear. Besides, the 7D is second generation Cine-DASLR from Canon, so if anything, it should cost more.
The main reason I would not get the 5D2 is its ridiculously oversized sensor. That is a deal-killer for me, and with the equally ridiculous downsampling in video mode, you are losing a good 75% of the 5D2 sensor's pixels in video mode, anyhow. It was great until the 7D came out, however.
The Panny GH1 has a slightly smaller sensor, so actually I would prefer that over the D7, but for the frame rate flexibility alone, the D7 is a Godsend.
I would not shoot anything at 24p due to the shutter blur, but it is nice that the D7 now can do 29.97 and not 30p. Plus, if you shoot for PAL TV, it does 25 Hertz, wow!
Lastly, Lonny, how are you going to "trade" your old Canon for this new one?

Anyhow, why is that even a problem if the new Canon EOS 7D is PopSci.com's fors HD-DSLR? I don't see any problem with that, actually. In fact, I thank the poster for helping us all. And I loved the test tremedously, not to emntion the fact that he had the camera right at the most exciting intersection of America, perhaps the whole world.
Thank you, PopSci.com. Don't mind the nasties.
It’s funny because we are prepping an action flick for this winter that will have some great Manhattan fight scenes and chases sequences. We are actually looking for a NY or Philadelphia based DP, as our previous chap retired, he did not do digital, anyhow. Unfortunately, those crucial fight/chase scenes we will have to shoot on film, or at the very least, on Panny P2 Varicam (CMOS+global shutter). But, we figure on using two or three of these little D7s for the non-critical shots, i.e. when there is no fast camera movement or subject movement. We”l probably use the D7 for 75-80% of the shots, and only 20-25% would be acquired by a film camera or Panny Varicam. It is still a tremedous cost savings, of course. Anybody care to chime in?
And there could be scripts that can be shot 100% with a Cine-DSLR, just not those where there is fast movement by the camera itself or by the subject(s) front of the lens. Too bad, really, but that’s the one major downside with CMOS plus rolling shutters.
The big difference between NYC and HK is, Times Square looked recognizably like it is today way back in the late 1920s, at which time in HK there were no tall buldings to speak of, only some huts. Think of Katowicze in the 1950s for comparison.
pretty ugly for the 'centre' of the world!
anyway, just to reassure you, the 'centre' of the world is wherever i happen to be at any given time.
at least that's how i see it! :)
if not, it's Sol in Madrid but i'm there quite often anyway.
wait hold on, i just remembered, it's paradise, Celtic Park, Glasgow!
anyway, more tests greatly appreciated!
If you do not have a B-camera that you can continue with, it is always a good time to go to the concession stand for that beer.
These DSLRs were designed for STILL photography, so they do not handle continued operation required for video shoots too well.
New update from Canon:

5D Mk II Firmware to be updated for 24p/25p and possibly other frame rates?! Video may be just as much the 5D's domain as the 7D's. Plus you'd get the bokeh of the full frame :)
