This test compares the new Kodak Zi8 and the Kodak Zi6. Same location, same view, same 720p capture. On the left you see the Zi8-view, on the right the Zi6-view.

We were asked to do this test in English for better understanding, but please be patient ... :-)

Split screen view Kodak Zi8 and Zi6.
Fullscreen Kodak Zi6.
Sound Zi6 and Zi8 with external microphone.
720p because of Zi6 limitation (the Zi8 does 1080p).
Final Cut Pro without using Plug-Ins.

Nice job! Although I was surprised you didn't run some side by side tests about the electronic image stabilization of the zi8 compared to the zi6

I have the Zi6 and wonder if it is worth upgrading? I want a Canon HV40\HV30 but not until they drop the price.

I had the Zi6 and traded it up for the Zi8. I like the Zi8, but there are some things I don't like. For one, the Macro mode isn't as good as the Zi6 macro mode. You aren't able to get as close with the Zi8. There's a huge difference in the distance you are able to focus on when in Macro Mode between the two cameras. I could practically lay the lense on an object and focus with the Zi6. Can't do that with the Zi8. Second, the sound. Zi6 had a better mic. The Zi8 internal mic is horrible.

    Hi Matt,

you are right. The Macro mode of the Zi8 is about 40 cm I think, on the zi6 it is less then 10 cm. And of course the sound from the internal mic ... I really don´t understand why Kodak changed that to the Zi6 ...

I hope that they fix it with a firmware update, but it doesn't appear to me, with my experience with Kodak anyways, that they listen to their customers. Or perhaps some hacker will find a way to hack the firmware so we can do it ourselves. The Zi8 has alot of potential. I wonder if anyone has had the unit apart yet. I would love to see someone modify it for Infrared spectrum by removing the IR Block filter, if it can be removed.

Here's a BIG concern: The Zi6 used to be known by many as having a problem they were calling "skip frame", where sometimes it appeared when playing video back, it would be "jerky", and skip frames. It was so bad on the Zi6 I bought I had to take it back. Does the Zi8 seem to have this problem as well? Didn't appear to in your video, but thought I'd ask.

And thanks for doing the review in English, even though you hate speaking it. LOL

Nice comparison. It looks like the Zi8 has a significantly wider angle of view, and I really like how it doesn't drop the FPS in low light conditions like the Zi6 does. I'm curious as to how close it can maintain focus without macro as most of my recording is of my son, who really likes close-ups.

Excellent guys - thanks. Your English is way better than my (non-existent) German.

I am just waiting to get a "hands-on" with a Zi8 instore somwwhere before making my final buying decision - but it looks favourite (unless I wait for a Toshiba S20).

In the spec for the Zi8 i can read :
61 mm (1080p), 46 mm (720p/60 fps, 720p, WVGA), 42 mm (still). This is equal focal length of a 35mm camera. Is this done on purpose by Kodak? Do you think having a mild tele(61mm) on 1080P and 46mm on 720p is an advantage?

Hi, awsome review! it was incredible!, but I have one question:
What resolution do you prefer for filming? 720p at 60 fps or 1080p at 30 fps?

    Thank you very much!
  • ifranz plus 2 months ago
    Hi,

thx alot. I prefer 720p at 30 fps. I did not find a way to work with the 60 fps with Final Cut since now. I use MPEG-Streamclip to convert the files.

    Cheers

Great piece! I am a big fan of these Kodak cameras. I will be buying a Zi8 soon, but good to see reasons as to why I should keep my Zi6.

The Zi8 adds a lot a features to a pocket cam that I was only dreaming of before. Would like to see Kodak produce a camera with a real optical zoom. The H.264 aspect of all their camcorders has me looking nowhere else at this time. Love my Canon Optura, but I stay away from AVCHD offerings.

I wont be able to load more than a third of this test before my connection times out and vimeo rests the cookie. But I would like to know if you use a resolution test chart in it?

There is some concern that the actual sensor in the zi8 is not the one advertised, but 1.6mp. people have seen the sensor model number reported in the firmware and looked it up. If you have a resolution est chart, could you possibly please do a very short test in 1080p good light?

    Thanks.

(I download original files to examine HD, that is why it would take so long.)

Why does the Zi8 crop the 1080p frame to 40-50% of the 720p frame? You cannot shoot wide with this camera. I think it is a serious issue.

Given that you are in Germany we'd be pretty much indispensable to you happiness. XD
One question though. They are capable of actual zoom, right (not just "digital" zoom)?
