On the first day of class we had an interesting discussion about ways to tell stories through time particularly in a handmade approach. We guessed at the age of the oldest animation. 100-200 years old? We actually found an article saying animation was represented on a 5,200 year old bowl! (See link below). This ancient potter was well on his/her way to realizing the phenomenon of our eyes known as persistence of vision. Which is why when we watch a film or video it appears to be moving. This led us to talk about using this trick to make stuff. We talked about animations and stop motion film. BY THE WAY, NOTE FOR THE CLASS: the feature length animation "The Little Mermaid" has about 122,400 animated stills. I got that number by multiplying 85minutes by 60seconds by 24frames per second, who had the closest guess?
