From here, they look like ants (2012) by Pete Grech, produced during the a|r|c artist in residence programme at ambient.space, London. HD video, 4 mins
I introduced camera tracking to the video collages, and turned my attention to the small scale. From their collective behaviour, the ants are evidently members of a colony, a single superorganism; but by concentrating on the individual, their diverse behaviours and demeanours become apparent. I could describe them variously as the driven, dawdlers, muggers, the lost; but I’d rather ant-thropomorphise than anthropomorphise. These observations have directed my thoughts towards our self-perceptions as unique individuals, and the possibilities of perceiving ourselves as participants of a group, movement, organisation, or superorganism.
