Rome Torti is a much loved and respected member of the Australian skateboarding community. Early in 2009, after experiencing several unexplainable bouts of acting strangely and feeling unwell, Rome was diagnosed with brain cancer.
His doctors found a tumour, the size of a lemon, in his brain and needed to operate urgently. Rome’s surgery manages to remove 30% of the tumour, however doctors were unable to take out any more, as the location of the tumour was too close to main areas of the brain, critical to functionality.
The operation was considered a success… but treatment was only just beginning.
Through what must have been a torturous year, two miracles occurred. One, Rome’s son, Ryder, arrived into the world. Two, Rome responded incredibly well to treatment and in May 2010, Rome’s cancer, had shrunk to the point that it appeared as nothing more than a blemish on the scans.
In June of that year, Rome “officially” joined the Element family as our skate team manager.
Following a regular check up in 2012, Rome and his family received the terrible news that his tumour had grown back. This time, due to the tumour’s location, the option for an operation wasn’t there.
The family once again face a huge battle with treatment beginning immediately.
Element & SurfStitch, along with some of the worlds best action sports athletes, brands, companies and artists, have come together to produce ‘Rome Torti - Against All Odds’, an on-line charity auction to raise money for Rome and his family.
100% of proceeds will go to Rome and his family.
