May 29, 2004 brought with it a massive tornado outbreak across central Kansas. We positioned ourselves perfectly as the first tornado of the day formed just within a mile of the location that we had parked nearly an hour before. That tornado lasted for almost 30 minutes and was rated an F3, it was extremely photogenic due to the LP nature of the storm, meaning Low Precipitation, which allowed a lot of sunlight to light up the tornado, at times turning the bottom 1/3 of the tornado itself hues of pink and orange.
