A simple breakdown of one explosion.

I used a combination of TP and some geometry with high pressure to get the initial blast. I then key framed the time scale down to 20% after the explosion expanded where I wanted.

The real trick in rendering was to make the smoke very thick and opaque so that shadows were strong an defined. Then in AE I used some simple tricks to crush the levels down and tint.
