There are approximately 5,000 Manatees left in the state of Florida. Increased Algae Blooms commonly known as red tides have put a major stress on this population, and when combined with human caused mortality (boat strikes), have resulted in over 400 recorded Manatee deaths since January 2013. The designation of protected areas such as the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge are proving to be paramount in keeping endangered species such as the Manatee around for future generations.
