Clever! I loved the edit in reverse to mix things up a little. Looking at the original Quicktime, there is a lot of detail in there. I'm very impressed...having a hard time finding something in this video to complain about.

What are the chances we could see the raw footage?
  •
  • Patrick Eggert plus 3 months ago
That was great man! 7D looks good! really thinking about it! considering it is almost $1000 cheaper than the 5D. Are you enjoying the different frame rates? I guess thats a stupid question of course you are.

Cool :), like the slow mo, I don't see any issues with the compression on this video, on is it just the resolution?, I mean the compression uglies that we get in dark parts sometimes, i often see it with my 5d2.

HA! Me too. I spent two minutes wondering why on earth anyone would design a push razor. I had come up with a few potential reasons before realizing the film was in reverse. For instance, sneaking up on the whiskers so as not to afford them time to retreat.

Now if you'll excuse me, I really should take this call from Gillette HQ.

Incredible Philip as usual especially considering the time and speed that you produced it. The DSLR fog is beginning to clear. You may want to think about the Canon EF-S mount 10-22 if you're looking for wide angle on the 7D. Equivalent to 16-35 35mm. It's basically L lens glass so quality is superb.

Stupid test? Fella, I assume you are joking.

I did this so I could make a fun short. In fact I stayed up all night so people could see something a little different from all the dull shots out there and to show people how good the cam is at achieving shallow DOF and slow motion.

Wanna see loads of wides shots and stuff? Sorry but my bathroom had no sky or water other than the tap. Not even a bath. Hopefully some shots in some stuff I will film over next few days will be more useful to you.

The lens does not cost more than the body. But that is generally the case with almost every camera I have owned in my 20 years of doing this.

Want to use cheap glass, that's cool. We cannot all afford the best. I want the 85mm f1.2 but can't afford it right now. I have nice lenses so I will use them. That argument is one of the silliest I have heard for a while.

With regards to the rest... I converted using mpeg streamclip which is much faster then you simply do a batch conversion in cinema tools which changes metadata in seconds. You then have the essentially slowed down footage. Your way? Not slow motion. Simply 25p. May as well shoot full HD then!

Anyone who knows me and my work will know that I do not do scientific tests. It does not interest me. I shoot for pleasure and that is how I test cameras, by properly filming.

Sorry for being so grumpy but i stayed up till 530am so I could post something different and if all you can say is stupid test then that really bugs me. Am i getting paid for this? No. I am doing this for the community.

    Philip

Dirk - what have you contributed to the vimeo/film makers world? Any useful information? Any tests when you should be working but instead stay up all night because a load of people on twitter asked, nay, demanded you get a new camera at short notice and post a video? I tell you what you have contributed. Naff all! So next time you go to criticise someone like Philip, and tell them that what they have done is pointless, take a long hard look at the rafter in your own eye.

    Dirk,

You are a real asset to the community. Keep up the good work. I apologise again for my stupid test. I will try to do less stupid stuff in the future and make sure I get more sky in my 5 foot square bathroom for you if I shoot in there again.

Also I will continue to use MPEG Streamclip when it is 2 in the morning and speed is of the essence.

Next time I will try and make you happy. You sound like you are doing amazing stuff. Wondering why you are even bothering commenting on my stupid test?

I will also try my best and learn more so I know what I am talking about in future, as you seem to know everything. You are a lucky fella. I hope I can be at your level one day and be as humble as you.

    Best,

    Philip

P.S. You didn't explain your workflow properly to start with hence me pulling you up on it.
  • Ian C plus 3 months ago
"I really know what i am talking about"

I laughed out loud when I read this. I find it just plain sad when people try to act all important on teh interwebs.

People of actual consequence don't go around belittling others and lecturing about how they know better than everyone else. People of consequence encourage others and quietly demonstrate their talent by living it out.

    Rudeness FTL, Self-importance FAIL

Theres a bit of an argument here. How it looks on an artistic level vs the science.

Some things may technical be inferior, could have been done better. But if it looks the same, smells the same and tastes the same. Whats the beef?

I could spend my life tweaking our footage to be technically perfect for our clients. But to be honest, they wont notice and wouldnt care.

If you have specific test requirements, get your own and do it. I dont recall Phil ever saying this was a fully comprehensive test yet you dived right in with "Stupid test". Wouldnt "This test does not serve my needs" have been a nicer comment?

It was phil having a shave. Probably about as scientific as the sh!t and the shower that came before it (or after if its in reverse, havnt decided yet)

Dirk, Philip is doing the community a favour. If you don't like what he's doing, then you go do the work to get your hands on the EOS 7D and shoot some stuff, do your own tests and show us what you mean. Or would that be asking too much?
And anyone that ends a long diatribe with "I really know what I am talking about" most likely doesn't.

  • Zach B plus 3 months ago
Phil, I'm no expert on optics, but I read somewhere (possibly on your blog?) that on a DSLR a 50MM lens acts not as a true 50MM but instead as a longer lens like an 85MM.

So if that's the case.... What appropriately smaller lens acts as a 50MM?

Or am I just talking out of my arse?
  • Philip Bloom plus 3 months ago
Hi Zach. The 50mm turns into an 80mm with the 7d. So you need something like a 35mm.

    p
  • EOS Network plus 3 months ago
Zach - the EOS 7D has an APS-C sized sensor. This means a field-of-view conversion of 1.6x. So take 50mm divide by 1.6 = 31mm-ish. Nearest is a 35mm as Phil said.

Nice video Philip! Very cleaver! I completely agree with you about the best test for a camera is to use it to shoot a video! rather than controlled scientific testing..
I've learn more about using the 5Dmk2 by shooting real world projects and learning it's capabilities and limitations.. The 7D looks like a great camera! Nice detail and smooth playback! I won't be selling my 5D2 anytime soon.. but it's another great option for folks looking for their next purchase!

Philip if you look at Dirks work here vimeo.com/2883255 I think it is obvious that he is amazing! I am in awe of his utter brilliance. I actually decided never to film again after watching this. I can't compete with such amazing talent and modesty. Also his test footage with the 7d was way more helpful. I just can't seem to find it online anywhere.

I just have to say that I am not a professional nor do I claim to be. I think that I speak for the other 99.99% that find Philip's shorts entertaining and informative. I really appreciate the different perspective that he brings to the table. Almost everything that I have learned has been from Philip's website and I am very grateful that there are people out there that share their years of experience so openly with the rest of us. Not everything has to be a masterpiece but I really enjoyed this short and it seams by the majority of the comments that others did too. If you were a fan you would know that Philip prefaced this video by saying that he was making a quick test because he felt compelled to show his fans footage of the 7D, and that he would do a proper review of the camera after he had spent some time with it. Sorry for the rant just can't stand when people act so high and mighty. Keep up the great work Mr. Bloom.
