Also check my live presentation of Birds on the Wires at TEDx São Paulo: tedxsaopaulo.com.br/jarbas-agnelli/

Reading a newspaper, I saw a picture of birds on the electric wires. I cut out the photo and decided to make a song, using the exact location of the birds as notes (no Photoshop edit). I knew it wasn't the most original idea in the universe. I was just curious to hear what melody the birds were creating.

I sent the music to the photographer, Paulo Pinto, who I Googled on the internet. He told his editor, who told a reporter and the story ended up as an interview in the very same newspaper.

Here I've posted a short video made with the photo, the music and the score (composed by the birds).

Music made with Logic.
Video made with After Effects.

An interview about this and other works: biginterview.org/

hahaha. Já me falaram que eu roubei do Villa Lobos. Não conhecia nenhuma das duas versōes (será que o Disney roubou do Villa Lobos?) mas imagino que isso já tenha sido feito muitas vezes.

A quote from your video description says:

"Not the most original idea in the universe, but I was curious to hear what melody the birds were creating".

The idea may not be original, few ideas are...but to bring an idea to life...that's a story that very few people can tell...and you my friend are an Amazing Storyteller & a Creative Force!!!

  •
  • Aaaaaaaah Jarbas! I love the way you think and I love your sensibility... Thank you for sharing that... I still don't understand how it made such a pleasing and touching melody... (I suspect you have something to do with that! ; )
  • Jarbas Agnelli plus 3 months ago
Haha. Thanks Iouri! The notes are the exact position of the birds (in between the lines). The rhythm is a interpretation of their position, since there are no bar lines (well, there's only one, that I've used). So, yes, the pleasing melody is not my invention. It's the birds idea.
  • jobe 2 months ago
I love this also. I love the though and sensibility that went into it. Looking for natural occurrences of structured and organized communication of beauty through image and music. That's what is so striking to me as I think this through, the image and the music seem to fit so well together. It seems so matter of fact, but then why am I so amazed by it? I think someone or some group should do a whole album. They could take photo submissions and maybe even musical interpretations from anyone interested. ...interesting. anyway, nice work.

Awesome. Are you aware of the Elvis Costello song "Couldn't Call It Unexpected No. 4"?

A sample: "We'll I'm the lucky goon/Who composed this tune/from birds arranged on the high wire"
  • Jarbas Agnelli plus 3 months ago
Somebody told me about Leonard Cohen "Bird on the wire". I'll check both.
  • Khoi Vinh 2 months ago
Ahh, for all I know that Elvis Costello song is an homage to Leonard Cohen. Anyway, neither takes away from the fact that *you* did this and it's wonderful.

I had to create a Vimeo account just so I could express my appreciation of your video! It's PERFECT. It sounds to me the way birds would sound if they were music, in the same way that Joe Hisaishi's "The Path of Wind" makes me think of a rustling forest at night. Thank you!

How dare you steal intellectual property from those poor birds! I will be representing them in a class-action lawsuit against you in a court of law! Just kidding, very nice work. Next time, perhaps try for some accidentals, or at least some non-Maj7 chord tones. Perhaps a more literal interpretation of the rhythm might add spice and a challenge to your style as well. But, who am I to say - only the birds truly know THEIR music!! Skwaaawk!
  • Jarbas Agnelli plus 3 months ago
I think the RIAA guys are scratching their heads right now, thinking about how they can sue me for stealing and posting the birds song.
