It's an almost harrowing experience to be this infatuated with female musicians. For years now, every instance of being in the presence of this music I really love is a practice of blunting, intimately softening my recording methods so as not to pierce the bubble. I'm so fascinated by their lives--loves lost, loves gained, idols, writing methods, dreams--that, for all the people that have commented on how intimate these videos are, I've become astute at being a fly, a wallflower, a gust of wind, a casual rip on the wallpaper of their private rooms, just so I can endlessly watch and learn. As if all the beautiful music created by equally beautiful artists like Johanna Warren is an intertwined secret shared and guarded by them all.
After the first two songs, Holly and I sat down and spoke with her about her life. Johanna and subsequently her band Sticklips, were new figures to me having been recommended by a friend for this video. We had caught her at a crossroads. Having already lived up and down random cities on the East Coast, the last being the sleepy town of Hudson in New York where we last saw Gregory And The Hawk nested, Johanna was again preparing for a big move. Only this time, the chaos of searching and transporting her life was caught right with the news that she'll be touring with Iron & Wine as part of their backing singers. Energy was high. So was the mental clutter. A lot of really great stories about music and love and inspirational friends were exchange which she had waved off respectfully to not be used. I agreed. The haunting three songs she shared in her empty apartment already said everything. Mesmerizing, sorrowful, and angelic all at once.
Which brought out this particular twist in my head again. Being awarded the delicate gift of a peak into these private, artistic lives, which doors do I open and which ones to keep closed forever? Never to look through the keyhole, never for a visitor, much less a stranger with a camera, to knock.
