Brooke Barels - Glut 1 Deficiency Stem Cell Patient

Brooke is the 83rd known carrier of Glut 1 Deficiency, also known as De Vivo Disease. The condition leads to low concentrations of cerebrospinal fluid due to poor glucose-transport over the blood-brain barrier. The brain is starved for energy. Patients typically follow a Ketogenic diet to provide the brain an alternative fuel.

Brooke's family brought her to China in 2007 to undergo a series of transplants of umbilical cord blood stem cells donated from live births. Having made impressive strides over the past two years she returned in 2009 for another round of transplants.
