Arthur "Buck" Taylor had a rough childhood. Living in the shadow of a big-time LAPD hero cop is no easy task. Especially when he's making you run obstacle courses and firing live ammo over your head while you do it. Flash forward to adulthood and after not making the cut for police work, Buck (Judd Nelson), naturally, has a father-sized chip on his shoulder and he means to take it out on anyone who crosses his path. Two mismatched detectives Malloy (Robert Loggia) and Dietz (Leo Rossi) are assigned to the case of the vicious and unpredictable "Sunset Killer" as he selects random victims from the telephone directory. As the body count mounts, the detectives realize the only way to stop the bloodshed is to put themselves in harms way.

Penned by Phil Alden Robinson (FIELD OF DREAMS, SNEAKERS), who would also handle writing duties on the film's 3 sequels, and lensed by Lustig against the warm California coast RELENTLESS is a tense and ultimately bleak game of cat and mouse.
