Again, absolutely stunning work. Really great shooting style, very consistent.

I've shot a couple of things recently with the 5D Mark II and really enjoyed the freedom of a light weight camera. How are you finding it? Looks like you have mastered it.

Look forward to seeing some more.

    Best wishes,

    Sy
  • Oliver Wilkins plus 3 months ago
    Many thanks Sy,

5D is great but I am leaving a pile of stuff on the editing floor. Focus is tough without a monitor and I wish it had a flip out screen. Plus the whole 30p pain.

Can't complain though, it def takes great shots. I'm totally stoked that I can get my old pre ai nikon lenses on the front.

The fact it looks like a stills camera is also a benefit for me, people respond to it well and it's already got me out of trouble with the permit police once.

It's so small and light that I've got it working on a mini crane that's been gathering dust for years, so all good.

the music was good but a tiny bit to close to indian style to be perfect. but thats my opinion
  • Oliver Wilkins plus 3 months ago
Thanks, yeah you could be right on the music. I thought it had quite a nice Philip Glass/ Koyaanisqatsi vibe to it.

Great stuff Mr Wilkins!! My only criticism is that it need more breakdancers! :-D

The Urban Pop Lock instructor fell through and the workshop had to be cancelled. Bummer.

You wanna take up the white gauntlet?

Next time I'm in Egypt I'll bring my Ghetto blaster, roll of lino and shell suit. Nothing more needed.

You going to be passing through London any time?

Does the 5D capture good sound or do you have to capture sound on an external device?
  • Oliver Wilkins plus 3 months ago
Sound is pretty rubbish, a mini jack in. I did some interviews and recorded sound on a mini dv camera and synched in post. Bit of a nightmare as the 5D only shoots 30p. Worth taking a look at the new Canon 7D, multiple frame rates etc...

  • Oliver,
You cinematography, screen direction and edit are wonderful. Although, I'm not so crazy about the highlights with lost detail. It tends to make the scene more video like and less like film. Loss of detail on film is so much prettier than on video, although many like Bob Primes will disagree with me.

    Regardless you work is beautiful.

  • Oliver Wilkins plus 3 months ago
    Hi Steve,

Thanks very much for your comment. I hear you on the highlights, partly me overexposing and partly over eager use of Magic Bullet. Appreciate the advice, will bear it in mind.

My z-finder is on the way. I can't wait.

great video thanks for sharing. the depth of field is so amazing here, is that the camera or were you able to add more depth in post? do you prefer AfterEffects or Final Cut?
  • Oliver Wilkins plus 3 months ago
    Thanks Aaron,

The DOF on the camera is great, due to it's huge full frame stills sensor. I an adaptor off ebay and stuck on my ebay nikon 50mm f1.4 - that gave a really shallow depth. I'm pretty inept at after effects so all done with Final Cut.

    Best,

    Olver

Great stuff Oliver! I particularly enjoyed the portraits/close ups. Any problems with the rolling shutter so far?
  • Oliver Wilkins plus 3 months ago
    Hi Ahmed,

Thanks, yeah generally happy with the camera, I am using it pretty much for tripod and steady shots. No real issues yet... but haven't tried any stuff under strobe lights.

    Will let u know.

So often people try to do too much (unfortunately myself included, nasty habit)... and what I love is the simplicity of this. The subject does the work, not the other way around. Great stuff... I'm getting my 5D soon down here in Sao Paulo. Can't wait to hit the Amazon.

    Thanks for the inspiration!
  • Oliver Wilkins plus 3 months ago
    Thanks Jared,

5D in the amazon sounds good - I look forward to it.

Brilliant! Its looks fantastic, I past by Minya once on my way to Asyut from cairo, and took a train, the land scape is great! You should also try getting a bit of the Coptic people too.
  • Oliver Wilkins plus 3 months ago
It's a great area and yes a good percentage of Coptic Christians. We do plan to include sequences from both a church and a mosque in the final film. we interviewed the sheikh and he was keen to tell us all about his weekly tea drinking sessions with the local priest. I certainly hope that'll come through in our final film. Many thanks for your comment.

    Best, Oliver.

Great cinematography Oliver !... What brand of lens adapter are you using to use your Nikkor glasses?
  • Oliver Wilkins plus 3 months ago
    Hi Joseph, many thanks.

This is actually shot with the Canon 5D mark2 DSLR camera.

I do also shoot with the Letus Extreme DOF adaptor... this for example...
