Two days after receiving my GH-1 camera, I shot this video in my backyard while experimenting with using my Canon EF 300mm f2.8 lens on it. Sometimes I also used a Canon 1.4x teleconverter. Focusing wasn't difficult because of the shallow depth of field, but keeping the image steady was problematic. Although the lens has image stabilization built into it, it doesn't work when the lens is attached to a non-Canon camera. I mounted the lens and camera on a gimbal head attached to a large Gitzo tripod.

With the adapter that I bought to use Canon lenses on the GH-1 you can't adjust the aperture settings on the lens, so all exposure adjustment was via the shutter speed and ISO settings. I'm considering buying an old Canon FD 300mm lens so that I can adjust aperture settings (NOTE: adapted FD lens apertures are adjustable), but so far I'm pretty satisfied with using my current lens.

The movie was editted with iMovie '08. No color correction was done.

Nice job. You have one heck of backyard. The 300 looked great.

Thanks for your comment, Mark. We have 5 acres with a one acre pond in rural, central Virginia. Lots of birds and animals are attracted to the pond and a few nearby apple trees. They are fun to photograph!

There is a workaround to change manually the aperture of Canon EF lenses, but you must carry an WF camera body with you. Just attach the lens on EF body, modfy the fstop and detach the lens keeping the DOF button pressed.

Thanks for the tip, Gary. I'll try that. It would be very useful to be able to stop down the EF lenses at times, especially those that aren't very sharp at the max aperture. The 300/2.8 lens is incredible even at f2.8 so I don't mind using it wide open.

Could you kindly tell me which EF/M4:3 adapter have you used and where have you bought it? For FD and M42 lenses I use the polish ones, but the guy does not build an EF adapter and I have some EF lenses. I've heard that chines adapters are dangerous for the camera and I'm a little afraid to buy one

    Thank you in advance

Gary, I bought my adapter on Ebay from a user named jinfinance. The adapter has the name "RJ Camera" on the side. It's made in China and cost me $79.50. I've used it on my GH1 and previously on a G1 that I tried for a few weeks before decided to buy the GH1. I haven't had any problems and hope that I don't! I checked today and there is another EF adapter being sold on Ebay for about $60. It looks different than mine but sounds like it functions identically.

I was waiting for John Boy, Jim Bob..Sue Ellen and the rest of the Waltons. But this was good enough. Nice sharp looking images.

If they had been around, I would definitely have included them Ian. I'm of that generation!

Come to think of it, where I live in Virginia is only about 20 miles from Walton Mountain which is the inspiration for the program. That must have inspired me.

ell...they sure don't make em like they used to. I enjoyed that program as a kid....so this kind of took me back witht the scenery, music and all.

    Awesome, Steve. So the 300 is effectively a 600 on a GH1?
  • Steve Muskie 4 months ago
That's right, it was a 300mm f2.8 lens effectively and when I used my 1.4x extender on it, it was an 840mm f4 lens! You must really have a steady support system for those, since they don't have any functional image stabilization. There was no way that I could pan and get a steady shot.

Great stuff! The only thing I might do is cut that deer shot short a little after the major chewing in the beginning as it doesn't really fit with the tone set by the music...
(not to be critical though -- it was a nice piece!)

I agree with you, Steve. I just couldn't bring myself to cut it. Actually, I want to add a couple of other things to the video. So the deer segment will probably get cut in version 2 of this video. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Beautiful footage. You must lead an inspired life with all of that wilderness at your backdoor... I'm coming to visit you with my GH1.
  • Steve Muskie 3 months ago
Thanks for your comment, Martin. I can't say that I lead an inspired life, but I certainly feel lucky to have some critters visiting our yard on a regular basis. They provide a lot of wonderful opportunities to see them enjoying our pond, fields, and apple trees.
