In February 2011 Wisconsin was thrown into political turmoil over the passage of a Republican sponsored budget bill that would, among other measures, severely restrict the collective bargaining rights of state employees. The Budget Repair Bill was met with swift resistance including several Democratic state senators fleeing to Illinois and a two week long occupation of the State Capitol by union supporters and students. The protests came to a head on the weekend of the 25th as over 70,000 people descended on the capitol and tensions rose between protesters, capitol officials and police over whether the occupation would be allowed to continue. Produced for The Minnesota Daily.
