Megan Gammon’s daughter, Petra, had always been a whirlwind of energy and spirit. When Petra was born, the doctors told her parents that their daughter had a heart murmur—a small lesion on her heart that disrupted her EKGs, but wasn’t expected to disrupt Petra’s active daily life. Four years later, however, what was thought to be a small lesion turned out to be a very serious issue. Petra had a golf ball-sized tumor on her heart that was causing a life-threatening arrhythmia. As Megan explains, “…your life stops…from being fine one day to, literally, everything changes.” Petra was brought to NewYork-Presbyterian, where Dr. Jan M. Quaegebeur, successfully removed the tumor. She was home from the hospital five days later. Today, Petra is able to do any activity a six-year-old girl would want—gymnastics, swimming, dancing, and more. According to Megan, “It’s as if it never happened. And we have NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital to thank for that.”
