Canon Philippines lent us a pre-production model of the 7d. We got it Tuesday 6pm and had to return it the following Thursday at noon.

We wanted to document something truly Filipino and came up with the idea of shooting a "Perya". There really is no direct equivalent in English. It's not as grand as a carnival, not as permanent and posh as an amusement park, there are no pumpkins nor cows in competition like a country fair. It is what it is - a Perya.

Shot in 1920 x 1080 at 24p. Transcoded to XDcam codec. Edited in Premiere Pro CS3.

No color grading was utilized.

No additional lights used.

Lenses:

16-35 mm 2.8
17 mm TS
35mm 1.4
50 mm 1.4
85mm 1.4
100 mm 2.8 macro
70-200 mm 2.8

Jason that was amazing! Love the look of that camera. Can't wait to get my hands on one!! 24p yeah!

I second this motion ! I'm loving my 5D Mark II but am so interested in playing with the 24p capabilities of this nice little addition to the Canon family.

I love it, one SMALL backpack that contains :
    5DMark II
    5 Lenses
    Zoom H4n and accessories
    Gorilla pod
Lee Filter holder and 6 4X4 filters +
a bunch of other misc stuffs.. So good.

Gorgeous piece, especially without color grading, was this a choice or time issue ?

Also, what did you use for sound ? I use the ZoomH4n and love it..

    Much love and Aloha, iamKP-

    Great work Jason,
but I can tell, it's not the same as 5D
  • You're right-- it's 24p. It's better.
  • paramon plus 2 years ago
then why it's half price of 5D if it's better?
    :)
  • Pascal Bergamin 2 years ago
I can tell it's not the same as 35mm and not the same as 16mm either. All I can say it's the first film shot on a DSLR that actually got me excited.
  • Diego Lama 2 years ago
Well, that's because it has a smaller sensor than 5d and Canon wants to displace Panasonic's GH1
  • Kevin Bjorke 2 years ago
fwiw, the 7D is closer to the size of a standard 35mm cine camera. 5D is Vistavision format, which is almost never used (I had a deuce of a time finding a Vistavision projector to rent a few years back -- only two in LA, one was Spielberg's personal one & the other was in a room with such a short projector throw that the image was only about four feet across!). So 7D probably looks MORE like most theatrical pictures.
  • @Kevin do you know if 35mm cine cameras use standard lens focal lengths, e.g. 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, etc.? People keep mentioning the sensor size in terms of matching depth of field I believe, but it doesn't address the issue of odd focal lengths with a crop sensor. 5D is too rich for my blood so I'm getting a 7D (canceled my GH1!)
  • Kevin Bjorke 2 years ago
Billy, check your local library for a copy of the ASC "American Cinematographer's Manual." It has a detailed wealth of such info. Camera marketers use "35mm equivalent" to *still* cameras. Think of cine as roughly being a 1.6x multiplier at the same focal length. Who knows how it will be masked at projection time though.

Std unsqueezed 35mm cine is 22x16mm and the 7D is 22.3x14.9 mm. Pretty close.

Now, when Canon ships EF-mount anamorphic lenses.... :)

Lots of great shots in this "Perya" -- I liked the t/s lens on the chasing light bulbs, and the girls huddling to hide from the scary ride especially

To those who are excited about 24p - how is it different or better than 30 fps? Honest question...
  • Simon Bak 2 years ago
Yeah, I would like to know that too!
  • ZHIC 2 years ago
    more cinematic,
    smoother movements,
colours are also different between 24 and 30.
just search around for a comparisons video, you'll see by yourself
    here's a quick example vimeo.com/4112787
  • Mr. Gersh plus 2 years ago
THe only reason the color is different on those shots is because of the conversion. Frame rate doesn't change the color by itself unless it had a different exposure overall. And 24p isn't "smoother." In fact it has more motion blur and other motion "artifacts". It's a subjective choice. 30p is actually a more "realistic" representation of motion but, to many, looks to "video-like." We've grown accustomed to the almost surreal movement we see in theaters and we prefer that as high quality. And, of course, the other thing is that 24p makes a film out a breeze. So, if you plan on making prints for distribution, there's really no discussion.

Also, the link shows a conversion to 24p, not original 24p footage. I think I might post some 30p vs 24p 7d footage just to show it more clearly.

I'm not arguing that one is better than the other, just making the difference clearer.

    Fantastic work! Congrats!

I've got a couple of questions for you:
    1) How did you record sound? In camera or did you use any extra hardware? If so how did you synced it with the video?
    2) Did you use any external monitor while shooting or just the built in LCD? If not, how did you manage to frame the crane shots?

Thanks in advance for the info
  • Charlie McRae 2 years ago
I would like answers to these questions as well.
  • Jason Magbanua plus 2 years ago
    1. sennheisers on the 7d for interviews.

on board mics for everything else. =)

    2. no external monitors. they're quite expensive.

Ian and Bob were the crane operators. they do a couple of test shots for motion and exposure. then go on to record the successive ones.

  • Stephen Goldberg 2 years ago
What did you record the audio with? Great stuff. All my lenses are Nikon. They will have to play catch up on this one.

Awesome job man. I love the journalism on this piece, and I LOVE Moby, so happy you used his song. (I'm seeing him live Oct 4, so excited!)

I want to believe this could have been achieved with the 5D Mark 2, as I have one. Do you think the 24p mattered that much?

Also, what external mics did you use? I know you must have used some. I see one being held in one shot, actually. Thanks in advance.
  • Jason Magbanua plus 2 years ago
Thanks Charlie. Lucky you, I have yet to see him live.

For some people, 24p, whether on a videocam or in this case, a dslr is a dealbreaker.

Really not so much for me.

BUT - we did a side by side of the same shot with a 5d in 30p and the 7d on 24p and we found the latter (not surprsingly) more filmic and suited to our purposes.

I know you can convert 5d footage to 24p but I guess the 7d will save you that extra step.

    Cheers!

This is superior work Jason! Saw this first at the Canon launch yesterday on an HDTV monitor. Impressive but amazingly better rendition on my Mac. The colors are so naturally rich and clean and I hardly see any jello effect.

Premiere pro won't take the raw footage, you have to transcode it to XDcam? How long does it take? Which parts of the video are with the 16-35? Is the f/2.8 lens sufficient for night shooting?
