I've never really done any fume explosions using a geo source really. I've used geo sources for pretty much everything except an explosion. I am hooked on it! No tricks to get rid of those particle spheres.
I also wanted to do some tests using the advanced field advection type. You can see there is the horizontal artifacting that is common with it. However, my spacing on this was not that small so I was able to get a lot of detail without too much sim time. I think this is really good for this type of thing where it's not super in focus, but you need detail.
