Sweet Honey In The Rock is a Grammy Award-winning African American female a cappella ensemble with deep musical roots in the sacred music of the black church - spirituals, hymns, gospel - as well as jazz and blues. Five women join their powerful voices, along with hand percussion instruments, to create a blend of lyrics, movement and narrative that relate history, point a finger at injustice, and sing the praises of love.

The group enjoys a strong and loyal following. But Sweet Honey in the Rock: Raise Your Voice, a 1-hour film for public television, conveys its power to a broad television audience for the first time.

Using concert footage, archival stills and interviews, the film chronicles their history and music, asserts Sweet Honey in the Rock's singular creativity, and conveys members' sense of empowerment as African American women. Sweet Honey in the Rock: Raise Your Voice, aired on PBS's American Masters on June 29, 2005 during primetime.
