the first full wedding we have shot exclusively with the Canon EOS 7D.

the skinny:
// one cinematographer
// two Canon 7D cams
// four lenses; 50 f1.2, 24 f1.4, 100 macro f2.8, 70-200 f4 non-IS
// one tripod, one monopod, one cinevate pegasus heavy lifter (slider)
// audio was through a tascam and zoom h4n paired with sennheiser ew g2 wireless lavs
//no external lighting was utilized in any of the shots in the final piece. everything was working with what was there.

total cost of all the gear used that day was approx $10k.

we didn't know about the surprise engagement book (unfortunately), so all of that was very improv shooting.

we have a longer writeup on the couple (the lovely jc + esther) and their day on our blog stillmotionblog.com

I'll probably have to watch this at least 20 more times to understand how you pulled that with one shooter... that's mind blowing.

I look very forward to your thoughts on this camera.

    Really an amazing edit.

awesome! i'm exited to get the 7d and hope that you guys will share your thoughts on this cam, especially the 7d vs 5d2 issue. can i ask you a strange question. which lens would you take with you to a wedding shoot if you could only take one? the reason i ask that is that i have about 1k left after preordering the 7d and would love to hear your thoughts. thx for the beautiful piece- true art and soooo inspirational.

This piece exemplifies its so much more than the gear. Its IRONIC that its shot with a pre-production 7D because for me, the story, how its edited and the amazing, thoughtful imagery trump any kind of tech gadgetry that may have contributed to the success of this piece. The fact its not a SDE also helped to pull this off with one shooter, is my guess. Great job Patrick, truly artful.
  • stillmotion pro 2 years ago
hmm canon might not like that so much, but i sure appreciate the sentiment.

There was a lot I liked about this piece, but my goodness 1:19 gave me goosebumps. Goes to show that it's not the kind of paint that makes the art, but the thoughts behind the painter.

That's freaking incredible with only one cinematographer. Have to ask, did you have along someone to help you with the equipment and all? Beautiful work.
  • stillmotion pro 2 years ago
i wish i did, that would have made my life a ton easier. the photographers were great friends, so they helped when the could and certainly made it easier for me. at times i was running a tripod, two sets of audio, and a cam on a monopod. it was hectic to say the least, but i think pushing yourself like that forces you to be very instinctual, and that is where you can really surprise yourself.

    Great work Patrick as always!
Question... Was this shot for a highlights piece only? This is the only way I can think one cinematographer will work, unless you can transport to multiple locations at once :P
  • stillmotion pro 2 years ago
it was shot as a highlights film. i could put together a 15-20 min main feature with what i have, which is what we normally do in our larger collections. the difference here would be the doc stuff, such as the ceremony and speeches, in which there would be times with only one or no angles.

    P.
  •
  • Amazing! Especially the shot at 2:24 considering it was a one man shoot.

I'm looking forward to Sydney in February, I'm going to soak that stuff up like a sponge.
  • stillmotion pro 2 years ago
2:24 - what a stressful moment. i wanted that shot as soon as i saw the ceremony site. right before the first kiss a guest standing in front of the little hole through the leaves i had found. i quickly asked her to move slightly, then the officiant walked straight through my line of site while they were kissing (you can see him moving in the shot). i am just happy i got enough before i cut to the unmanned angle.

I'm looking forward to Melbourne - Feb. This is the sort of shoot that I would really like to learn more about in-depth, being a single shooter myself.

I'm also very curious about your audio setup? Any chance of explaining that in more detail?

    Excitement!!!!!
  • stillmotion pro 2 years ago
    hey joshua,

AUS is going to be so much fun :)

i ran the sennheiser lav mic into the tascam. that lets you have independent levels for each, so i ran to mics, in mono, and controlled the level on the tascam. i also had a zoom h4n out of the board as a backup the lav is on the groom, just hidden under his tie (just to up the production value that little bit more). i have a better audio source for the brides vows // an iriver, but haven't had time to drop it in yet.

    P.
  • Marko Visual 2 years ago
How are you not getting noise from under the tie? I tried using the Rycote Undercovers with no success, could still hear the clothing. It's frustrating, hate seeing the mics. could it be I need a different mic? Which Sennheisers are you using, if you don't mind me asking? And can you explain the iRiver, is it on the bride? Thanks.

  • This comment has been deleted.

  • stillmotion pro 2 years ago
the key was to identify what i wanted first, then sync it up. it actually did not take long. the gift is natural audio. the speeches is a feed from the dj. the grooms vows is from his wireless lav. and the officiant is either a feed from the dj or the lav i placed on him.

    P.
  • Phil P 2 years ago
The more natural audio, the better it gets as a story! Great job guys.

For the sake of critiquing audio, is it because of the final audio codec that the bride and especially the groom sounds like it went through some audio processing? You guys should approach Lectrosonics for a 411 or SR to try out! :)

But overall, superb, you guys never fail to disappoint!

  • Great work. You guys are my favorite TV show (every night I am amazed by one of your new episodes).

Is there any technical difference between what can be achieved with the 7D or the 5D MARK II? What about the REBEL T1i, if used with the same lenses?
Is there really a difference among these cameras in the HD function?
  • stillmotion pro 2 years ago
yes, there certainly is. a rebel T1i is awesome. it lets you do quite a bit and i have something to show shot entirely with that soon (not a wedding either). the 7d and 5d are very similar in terms of image, to me, but the difference is the crop factor on the 7d lets you get in tighter with less light loss. of course with the 7d you also get 24P.

  •
  • Jeff Brouillet plus 2 years ago
Patrick, your artistry transcends the capabilities of this camera. This piece is visually stunning and the story is so fluid... I cannot believe how many amazing moments were captured so beautifully.

Did you suffer from Steadicam withdrawals while shooting this? :) I pre-ordered one of these when it was announced earlier in the month, can't wait to get my hands on it. Are you able to comment on the differences in the 1080p image quality between this camera and the larger sensor on the 5d?
  • stillmotion pro 2 years ago
    thank you jeff :)

to me the image quality is entirely the same, if not a slight nod to the 7d because of the 24P. i would take 24P over the larger sensor, for sure. aps-c is still huge.

i enjoyed leaving the steadi out, it is always great to see things in a different way.

  • Kanim Allomin 2 years ago
I got a little dizzy. There are too many shots and fast cutting for me to keep up. Maybe I am a slow watcher of wedding cinema. For my job I like to be a wedding cinema critic one day. Good luck to me. I like that idea we start using a villian in our wedding feature motion pictures because the bride and groom have it too easy and this is boring. This can be CGI if you have no villian why not? Please pay the professional actor SAG scale. to fight. Let us petition UCLA to start this Wedding Cinematography Masters of Fine Arts. Shall I praise you as everybody else in this good party so much for this hard work. You will such a great job shooting news stories because you can get many large quantiteis of coverage. Thank you for this my good chap. Please do not kill yourselves with shooting weddings. 5D looks better more than 7D I think for it is a larger much highest sensor size higher than RED Mysterium included and here we take a depth of feild hit with reduction in this sensor, Greetings.
  •
  • Sean Ward 2 years ago
depth of field taking a hit? Did you watch the vid, the DOF is plenty shallow.
  • stillmotion pro 2 years ago
i think a lot of people forget that sensor size is related to field of view (the crop factor) and not depth of field. the 50 f1.2 has the same dof on the 7d or 5d (it just looks tighter on a 7d), so yes there is more than enough.

woah that was great stuff patrick. a classic piece once again. one man show is after all possible on a setup for a stillmotion production. Then again $10k worth of equipment i got to work my ass off to own that kinda of stuff. you have definitely convince me that if the 7D was used tastefully you can still get a bunch of beautiful images. If i can afford i will spend my money on a stillmotion workshp. :)

  • stillmotion pro 2 years ago
i used the 70-200 f4 non-IS here. i chose that one as it is super affordable at like $600, smaller, lighter, and a tad sharper than the 70-200 f2.8. they have an f4 IS version which is amazing as well.

    Patrick,

Your thoughts on F/4 vs F/2.8? I assume since it's being used as a telephoto that DOF isn't as important for you?

    Thanks
  • stillmotion pro 2 years ago
actually the dof is important, but in the opposite way you might expect. i find 2.8 too shallow for most shots. slight movement and its not sharp enough, but f4-f8 gives you much more to work with. add to that it is lighter, sharper, and half the price. we have the 2.8, but we have 2-3 of the f4 version.

What happens when you get video clips on 5D II or 7D larger then 4GB (12min)? Do you have to stop and start shooting again or just camera splits files on max of 4GB? I still cant believe that 5D II sensor (36x24mm) shoots the same as 7D (22x15mm) with the same sharpness and DOF. I can't decide which one to buy first. Thank you!
  • stillmotion pro 2 years ago
the cam stops recording between 12-14 min. if you hit stop, you can start recording again right away.

    P.
  • Danial Haris 2 years ago
so what happens if a speech last more then 14 mins. If you hit stop and start record again will there be a gap of missing footage?

isn't it crazy to keep track of recording time on 2 7Ds during the ceremony as a one man cinematographer?

one question: you said you were not using ND filters. How did you manage to shoot in daylight? Even at 100 iso, wasn't the iris always too close to have the right depth of field? I guess you didn't exaggerate with the shutter speed, the motion seems pretty natural all the time.
  • stillmotion pro 2 years ago
generally outside, if i remember correctly, i was shooting about f5.6 and then 1/1000 of a second. the motion does look pretty good, but they aren't moving that much, otherwise that high shutter would really stick out.
