North Coast Church shut down for the weekend of April 27-28 to mobilize a workforce of 9,000 volunteers on 350 projects that will generate an estimated $1.5 million in community improvements throughout North County.

The Weekend of Service is North Coast’s bi-annual effort to unleash compassion in the surrounding community in big and tangible ways. Projects include renovations at dozens of public schools and community centers, skilled repairs at homeless shelters and non-profit facilities, a gigantic garage sale fundraiser and a talent show to entertain seniors with dementia in assisted living.

“Our church wants our community to know we truly desire to see it thrive in every way,” said Charlie Bradshaw, North Coast Church executive pastor. “We have a big church, so we can—and should— use that to make a big impact. We want to be the hands and feet of Jesus beyond our church walls.”

In recent months, North Coast has gathered wish-lists from officials at more than 100 different public and non-profit sites, resulting in 250 major renovation and outreach projects. More details about the projects will be released at a later date, but a list of projects is available at weekendofservice.com.

“You can imagine the planning and logistics involved with this,” said Bradshaw. “We want to make sure we’re doing quality work.”

Out of the congregation, 250 skilled workers have signed up to offer free professional services for nearly every project—from carpentry to plumbing to landscaping. In coming weeks, the church will register 7,000 volunteers and compile large-scale orders for materials. Project managers have already ordered enough mulch to cover 11 football fields.

“The best part of all of these numbers is that they translate into acts of kindness we get to shower onto our neighbors—no strings attached,” Bradshaw said.

This is North Coast’s fourth Weekend of Service. In 2011, about 6,000 volunteers tackled 185 projects. The weekend work for 2011 was estimated at around $1.4 million*. North Coast fosters longstanding relationships with many of these agencies through weekly service projects throughout the year.

*The approximate value is figured by using conservative cost estimates for materials and wages based on industry standards for skilled and unskilled workers.
