Here you can see a new clip of rehearsals for Pavane, featuring Company Principals Jenna Roberts and Iain Mackay.
The work was choreographed by Kenneth MacMillan, who also created Birmingham Royal Ballet's production of Romeo and Juliet. Famously, the Company were performing the latter on the night that MacMillan died, in January 1992.
Birmingham Royal Ballet immediately added Pavane to their then-current programme of one-act works, in tribute to the choreographer. The lead roles were danced by Marion Tait (now Assistant Director) and Kevin O'Hare (Now Director at the Royal Ballet).
Originally created in 1973 for a gala celebrating Britain's ascension to the European Union, Pavane was not considered by some to be showy enough for such an occasion, however it stands as an aptly beautiful tribute to the choreographer's memory.
