When justice is served, and a family member incarcerated we all begin serving our sentence. At that moment we are all incarcerated. The struggle of the inmate’s family to pick up the broken pieces and move forward is a very difficult and frightening task. Life going forward is a mix of shame and struggle emotionally and financially. When my husband was sentenced it became my sole and immediate job to make sure my children were going to be safe. Not just physically but emotionally and financially. When the support is gone and the shame and all the responsibility remain – I realized it is JUST US. Society doesn’t think of the unseen and unheard victims. The innocent and underserving children left behind need support and help. With awareness, there can begin to be help, empathy, assistance, healing.
