The fossils are from a period when the environment was wet, lush and green supporting a complex mosaic of riparian tropical and temperate rainforest species. Climatic change during the mid-Tertiary Period caused aridity and the forest, not able to adapt to the change became locally extinct as watercourses and lakes became dry. These fossils hold the "key" to the past and are environmental indicators to past climate change.
