Canon HV20 and DM-50 Mic Test
I just got my new HV20 and DM-50 external mic, and I decided to go through a series of tests to see what sounds the best. I fiddled with different volume levels and with attenuate on and off.
The first series is of a silent room with different settings. The second series is the same setup, but with me speaking at about 6 feet away to see how recorded voices sound. All volume levels are straight out of the camera at 0.0db in vegas (except for one which I noted. I raised the volume to match the volume level before it.)
Overall, at least under typical conditions, I don't find the attenuate feature very useful. Volume levels are super quiet, and raising the volume as I did just reveals the strange hum, which sounds worse than the motor noise. Personally I like the -12db setting with attenuate off from the DM-50.
I've also thrown in a test at the end using the internal mic. The DM-50 might not be perfect, but it's a serious step up.

The good thing is when there's any sound (such as dialog) it almost all cuts away or is at least masked well enough.
Unless you're going to be in a known loud (or maybe even windy) environment there's no reason to attenuate or compress the audio. There are great audio filters which can fix many issues during editing.
It's a nice camera. Thanks for the tests. Take some outside shots / tests when you get a chance. I'm having a tough time deciding, but I still have a few months to go so I guess I'm in good shape.
It's hard to gauge what you're hearing at a good volume. You could turn the up the volume way loud on the first clips and hear the motor noise...but that's far too loud when there is actually something to hear. I find that if I set my volume to a comfortable level on the -12 voice test, when I finish talking it's pretty hard to hear the motornoise, and we're talking a completely silent environment.
I think my next test will be outdoors with white noise to see if the motornoise is masked completely.
Check out my other videos. Just put one up showing what can be done with the noise reduction 2.0 plugin in vegas.
Anyway, thanks for posting. Good to see these things, as I'm a new HV20 user.
