Stevie Lonestar Live At The Dolphin
I went into the Dolphin (the oldest pub in Derby, so old that Dick Turpin used to go there for a swift half) for a drink one night and heard an odd but nice sound coming from The Snug (the bit behind the bar with a fireplace and seats for about 8 people only). The sound turned out to be a chap I've seen live about 100 times around Derby - Stevie Lonestar (the Lonestar part is taken from the 'alter-ego' he used to perform as - a washed up and under appreciated sixties pop star still doing what he was born to do regardless of everything and everyone). He was just sat in there playing, while his wife nodded off in the seat next to him.
I've never really been that into what he does, but he was doing a beautiful Roy Orbison number as I walked in. He let me film him playing one of his songs. I don't know if it was the evening or the setting, but everything about the whole experience felt eerily timeless...and I was, for the first time, really liking what I heard coming from Stevie Lonestar. Then an old regular from the bar I used to work at came in, seemingly oblivious to the whole thing, which Stevie doesn't look happy about. Not at all.
