I was returning to the roots of my family when we journeyed to the Beckley Coal Mine. Included in the tour of this historical coal camp is the school, church, and homes of the miners and family representing the early 20th century coal camp life.
The main attraction is a tour of the mine, 1500 feet beneath the hillside, from mine entrance to the working areas of the actual mine.
I now know why my father would not go into the mines.
