This project for a new skyscraper was inspired by Istanbul’s multi-layered history and culture. GAD’s point of departure was how the multiple layers of a contemporary city: historical, cultural and social, could be repositioned into a vertical version of the lateral city creating a new diagram for 21st century skyscrapers.

By its very nature, this GAD-initiated project warranted a distinctive design. Extensive research resulted in a flexible form based on a lattice-work structure that could incorporate multiple programs such as cultural facilities, offices, residences, hotels, cinemas, theaters, and retail centers into a 24-hour “mini-city” situated above ground. Floors are cantilevered one on top of the other within the woven structure. In addition, the dynamic structure allows for a range of public spaces, including sky gardens and plazas, to be accommodated in the free spaces in between the programmatic elements. A platform at the apex of the tower is reserved for a viewing terrace, café and restaurant.

This new form of skyscraper is an innovative approach to providing high-rise architecture in earthquake zones.
