I'm building a music box powered by a Raspberry Pi to stream music over Wi-Fi, and as part of the creation I wanted to include a music visualizer. After having little luck finding a great software based audio visualizer, I began exploring hardware solutions. I found a tutorial on hackaday.com on how to convert a CRT monitor into a crude oscilloscope. You basically just hook speaker wire up to the CRT coils, and this is what you get.
This was a test I did using a Moog synth emulator to see how various tones come through.
Here's another test using music: vimeo.com/65278709
WARNING: CRT monitors are dangerous (electrical voltage, and highly pressurized gas & glass) and should be handled with extreme care. Attempt at your OWN RISK.
